What got you here is what gets you out.

You are feeling stuck, and you don't know what to do.

Well, one thing is for sure:

Stop Ignoring Your Problems!

It's not always easy to see the real problem, especially if you have ignored it until now.

Become aware of your feelings and frustrations, and don't continue to ignore them. Think about what is getting you down.

And above else, don't blame anyone but yourself!

Some simple questions can help you identify the problem and start working on a solution when you are stuck.

Do some self-examination:

  • What exactly causes you to feel stuck?
  • Do you feel that you are in a rut?
  • Is it due to your work situation?
  • Your personal life?
  • Your relationships?
  • Your feelings about money?
  • Or is the problem more local: a project that just isn't going well and seems like it's never going to get done?
  • Are you overthinking things too much?

Think about what is going on right now. Acknowledge your feelings. Own them. This is your current reality.

It is also your starting point for your future. It is like a seed that contains the soil and sunlight necessary to grow into a life you want.

Alan

I'm just really stuck.

Julianne

Well, you might want to ask yourself what the cause of your frustration is. Do any particular thoughts or feelings come up that you think are the root of the problem?

Your Mission should you choose to accept it:

  • Write your feelings down on a piece of paper and recognize them.
  • Ask yourself what is making you feel stuck.
  • Actively work on your problems (every day counts!)
  • Talk to a friend about what's bothering you.

It's Natural!

Feeling stuck is really just a natural part of the process. It's time to stop digging and start appreciating!

Stop Digging, Start Appreciating!

Don't be so hard on yourself.

Struggling to get out of a hole is useless. Stop digging and start appreciating that you're already here right now.

You are not a failure. You are not hopeless.

You don't have to continue feeling bad about yourself or your situation.

You're stuck right now, but you can choose how you handle it. It's easy to quit, but it's even easier to change your circumstances little by little.

Feeling stuck is quite natural. It's a form of resistance of your reptilian brain to the changes you are making in your life right now.

Your achievements so far should make you proud of yourself.

Make a list of the things that go well, and you are happy with. Appreciate all those things as the seeds to get yourself unstuck.

Alan

All the time I feel like I don't know what to do next. It's hard for me to find a good direction.

Julianne

Maybe focus on finding a way to be productive instead of focusing on your frustration and feeling bad about yourself.

Your Mission should you choose to accept it:

  • Write a note of appreciation to someone you have not previously acknowledged.
  • List 3 things that you are grateful for.
  • Identify one thing in your life that you are proud of.
  • Make a list of the next 10 things that you will try to do on your own. (if you need some inspiration... start here)

It's Your Intention!

You want to break free from a stuck routine, but you're not sure how.

It's hard to know where to start when you're trying to get unstuck. But even if you decide that you just need a change of scenery, or maybe find an inspiring mentor, one change can go a long way and help strengthen your self-confidence and get you out of your rut. All it takes is focusing on one thing that will help you escape the cycle!

The trick is picking something small enough that doesn't overwhelm you because you are already feeling stressed out by our current situation.

Instead of trying to be perfect in everything and put your life on hold, focus on one thing that you can change.

Even if you change just one thing, you'll be able to break free and progress.

Think about your current situation. What's your main problem right now? How can you change one thing that will help you get out of it?

You don't have to change everything, just one thing. Being stuck is a result of a set of behaviors. Behaviors that repeat themselves. It's a routine. To unstuck yourself, you have to break the pattern.

One of the ways to accomplish that is by changing one of those behaviors. It doesn't matter which one. It also doesn't matter how you change it. As long as you break the routine, you will eventually find a way out of the rut.

Alan

Ok, so I need to find something productive to do.

Julianne

Choose one thing that is simple and not too complicated, or doesn't require a lot of effort on your part. Something that will help you feel good about yourself.

Your Mission should you choose to accept it:

  • Pick one change and start doing it.
  • Find an inspiring mentor.
  • Find a new place to work.
  • Do something you've always wanted to try.

E

Escape the RUT and change your life

Start Now!

There's no need to feel stuck. You can always do something.

When you're in a rut, sometimes it's good to take a break and reflect on what really matters. Exercise, social activities, arts and crafts are all great ways of getting your mind off of work or school for a while! Get out with friends or take up a new hobby. These small changes can have surprisingly significant effects on your mood and those around you!

It's like a vacation for your brain. It makes it easier to find solutions that would have otherwise seemed impossible.
It helps you change the way you think and feel.
Focus on something that makes you feel happy. This will change the patterns of your thoughts.
When you feel better, you're more likely to move forward.

Go for a walk. Do some exercise. Try something new. Learn a new skill. Learn to cook or learn another language. Be creative, try painting, take up a hobby, learn to play an instrument, or start a blog and write in it every day for one week. It doesn't have to be something big and out of reach; you can do this with little things too!

It's not about escaping reality. It's about finding a positive focus that will help you get out of the rut you are stuck in. Enjoy the moment!

Other things you can do are:
Talk to a friend about something that makes you happy.
Read a book that makes you feel good.
Get involved in social activities.

It may be a few minutes between each thing, or it may be an hour. That is fine. Either way, get out of your head.

Now, with a fresh mind, you can get out of the rut you're stuck in.

How can you make things better?
Maybe you can make your workplace a little more fun for yourself or perhaps you can do things that will make your job a bit more interesting. Perhaps you can try to find ways to have better relations with your colleagues.

Every decision you make, every action you take...
it has an effect on your life and your situation.
Make a plan and follow it.
It will help you get out of your rut.

Alan

Thanks! I'm glad you helped me. I feel like I was just stuck in a rut and without your help, it would have been really hard for me to get out of it.

Julianne

It's not about escaping reality. It's about finding a positive focus that will help you get out of the rut you are stuck in. Enjoy the moment!

Your Mission should you choose to accept it:

  • Talk to a friend about something that makes you happy.
  • Read a book that makes you feel good.
  • Get involved in social activities.
  • Do things that will make your job a bit more interesting.
